Download, install and launch OpenAudible
Select: Controls: Connect to Audible and log onto your audible account using the built-in browser. Answer any captchas to prove your humanity.
Select: Controls: Full (or Quick) Library Rescan to fetch a list of all your books.
Select: Controls: Download All From Audible. (Or download individual books.)
Select one or more books for converting to MP3. Select Action: Convert to MP3 (or switch preferences to use M4A)
You should now have a backup of your books. Run every time you buy new books!

Note: If you get a message about changing an Audible download manager setting, follow these directions.
